Though at times life can be hard, and circumstances overwhelming God does not want us to dwell on anything other than His goodness. Because it is in rejoicing and giving thanks for all that we do have and all that God still has for us, that are circumstances no longer weigh as heavy on us. God is a God of peace, joy, and hope.

For this is the will of God... God's will, in every command He gives us, is for our benefit. His desire is for us is to be joyful, thankful and constantly talking to Him. Obedience to the Lord produces the most amazing and satisfied life ever! Nothing can compare.

What right have I to not rejoice continually in the Lord? For it is the Lord in whom we rejoice. He is never changing and always faithful. When we make our supplication to the Lord we are thus filled with a gratitude for the weight that is lifted when we bow before the foot of the cross. Let us not therefore lay aside prayer and the giving of thanks, for these are the pathways to godly joy.

I think this verse has a lot to do with our focus. If we are praying continually, then our focus is continually on the Lord and we are in constant fellowship with Him. Rejoicing and giving thanks are results of being in communion in Christ, which is His will for us! It's why He died, because He wants a relationship with us.
